I really like the information that’s been presented in this podcast and I really value Stanton Peele’s theories. I have been an addiction counselor for about 7 years in total and have been drug free for 18 years. The only thing I have seen for value in the 12 step programs is that as people have lost their identity and their credibility due to the use of drugs and alcohol. Alot of the time the have destroyed their social world and are only excepted into a few communities. The drug using community and the aa/na community. I find the strength of the aa/na programs are successful in the begining of the person recovery process because they find a non judgmental accepting atmosphere which is hard to find especially in small communities. Biggest barrier for people trying to change their life is finding a loving, and nurturing community with life giving direction.
