Stanton Peele and Archie Brodsky will join SMART Recovery® for a FREE Special Event Webinar revisiting the concept of behavioral addiction first espoused in 1975 in their ground-breaking book, Love and Addiction. Here, as in the book, they will focus on love and relationships, as illustrative of addiction, but with the benefit of 40 years of research and practice to inform and point to answers reflective of today’s realities.

Together, Brodsky and Peele were pioneers in recognizing that addiction is not confined to substances but is a human phenomenon that can develop along a spectrum of severity in the relationships we form – with others, with substances, or with behaviors and activities. They argued against appealing, but inaccurate, simplistic views of addiction.

Even with recent focus on disease analogies, few would dispute that there are multiple, complex factors that contribute to creating and perpetuating an addiction.

Initially, their ideas were shocking and considered heretical. Now, they are widely accepted as common knowledge in the psychology and addiction treatment professions, and awareness continues to spread throughout the general public.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Agency (SAMHSA) vigorously promotes the idea of multiple pathways and client-centered goals as keys to health and well-being.

The rise of issues with technology, porn, gaming and other modern ills strongly reinforces the idea that addiction is non-specific in its object.

People recognize more and more that emotional, cognitive, social and cultural factors all play a role in these issues. We are witnessing an evolution in thought regarding addiction, and the approaches to helping those with addictions are shifting as well.

This will be a fascinating discussion with these two friends and colleagues who radically changed our understanding of addiction, in a lively, friendly venue. We think you’ll find the content startlingly fresh and very much hope you’ll join us! Register at www.smartrecovery.org/events.

Thanks to SMART Recovery, for continuing to promote sensible thinking about addiction recovery and provide stellar peer support for those struggling!
