Webinar: Love and Addiction Revisited with Stanton Peele and Archie Brodsky
Love and Addiction Revisited
Saturday, October 13, 2018
5:00 PM EDT
Stanton Peele and Archie Brodsky will join SMART Recovery® for a FREE Special Event Webinar revisiting the concept of behavioral addiction first espoused in 1975 in their ground-breaking book, Love and Addiction. Here, as in the book, they will focus on love and relationships, as illustrative of addiction, but with the benefit of 40 years of research and practice to inform and point to answers reflective of today’s realities.
Together, Brodsky and Peele were pioneers in recognizing that addiction is not confined to substances but is a human phenomenon that can develop along a spectrum of severity in the relationships we form – with others, with substances, or with behaviors and activities. They argued against appealing, but inaccurate, simplistic views of addiction.
Even with recent focus on disease analogies, few would dispute that there are multiple, complex factors that contribute to creating and perpetuating an addiction.
Initially, their ideas were shocking and considered heretical. Now, they are widely accepted as common knowledge in the psychology and addiction treatment professions, and awareness continues to spread throughout the general public.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Agency (SAMHSA) vigorously promotes the idea of multiple pathways and client-centered goals as keys to health and well-being.
The rise of issues with technology, porn, gaming and other modern ills strongly reinforces the idea that addiction is non-specific in its object.
People recognize more and more that emotional, cognitive, social and cultural factors all play a role in these issues. We are witnessing an evolution in thought regarding addiction, and the approaches to helping those with addictions are shifting as well.
This will be a fascinating discussion with these two friends and colleagues who radically changed our understanding of addiction, in a lively, friendly venue. We think you’ll find the content startlingly fresh and very much hope you’ll join us! Register at www.smartrecovery.org/events.
Thanks to SMART Recovery, for continuing to promote sensible thinking about addiction recovery and provide stellar peer support for those struggling!
Stanton Peele, Ph.D., J.D., is a world-famous addiction expert who has investigated, written about, and treated addiction over five decades.
Based on this work, he was recognized in The Atlantic as one of “10 people who are revolutionizing how we study addiction and recovery.”
In the course of his life’s work, Stanton identified that addiction isn’t limited to alcohol or drugs. He was among the first to describe natural recovery and its anchors in life of values, work, marriage, and family. Along with his many books and academic and popular articles, he created the Life Process Program, originally developed for a successful residential rehab center. The revolutionary online version of LPP is now used around the world.
Archie Brodsky is co-founder of the Program in Psychiatry and the Law at Harvard Medical School. In addition to Love and Addiction he has co-authored 15 books, including The Truth about Addiction and Recovery (with Stanton Peele), Preventing Boundary Violations in Clinical Practice, and Clinical Supervision in Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling.
Mr. Brodsky is on the board of directors of The Influence Foundation, which recently launched the website filtermag.org to advocate for rational and compassionate approaches to drug use, drug policy, and human rights. He is a former chair of the Human Rights Committee at Massachusetts Mental Health Center.
